FAQs
Q. How do you pronounce NausicaƤ?
A. Naw-sick-ee-uh, depending on your accent. You can hear it said aloud here.

Q. Did my character enter to win a ticket, or did someone else enter them?
A. Completely up to you. Contest entries were advertised in newspapers all around the US, Canada, and the UK in print, as well as on the internet, so it would have been easy to enter.

Q. How many passengers in total were onboard the NausicaƤ?
A. Only the 100 who won tickets. They would know that this maiden voyage was very special, and that there would only be 100 test passengers, all subjected to the full VIP treatment in exchange for writing a review of their experience at the end of it all.

Q. Is Odyssey Lines a well-known cruiseline (such as Carnival or Royal)?
A. No. It is brand spanking new, and the NausicaƤ is their first ship.

Q. That sounds a little fishy.
A. Hey, free cruise. What more do you want from us? Everybody starts somewhere. Just not everyone ends up lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Throw us a bone.

Q. When the game begins, what date in time are our characters at?
A. December 26th, 2009. We will be playing from the beginning.

Q. If my character won a ticket, how many tickets did they get? Could they bring their family?
A. There were all sorts of entries. Solo entries, entries for a pair of tickets, and family passes. Family passes means that at the time of entry into the contest, the number of people in the party that would ultimately go were entered ahead of time so that they would all get a ticket.

Q. Can I play a crew member, or other staff?
A. Other staff, yes. Crew member, no. Crew members are all on NPC-basis - and yes, this means you can NPC them too. At some point we will post a guide to NPCing a crew member - while they are still around to BE NPCed. Other staff is absolutely available. There are bars, stores, restaurants, and a full spa, so anything you can think of that would be needed on the ship, feel free to app for. We will keep a list of taken staff to make things easy on everyone.

Q. What was my character allowed to bring with them on the cruise?
A. Whatever they could get past customs. PLEASE NOTE that if you wish to have your character carrying weapons or drugs, the mods must be made aware of this at the time of your application.

Q. Can I play a child?
A. At this time we are requesting that you only app characters under 13 years old if it has been arranged for someone else to play a guardian. This rule may change in time.

Q. How does the journal system work?
A. Character journals are just that - character journals. Not only will you use them to post scenes to the community, but you can update them as your character would write in their own journal. Please label hand-written or personal journal entries as private entries. Additionally, the ship comes complete with a system very much like Twitter, Facebook, or LiveJournal. So your character CAN write public entries on the computer in their room. Characters do not have to write in their journals if they do not want to. Journal entries of any kind are optional.

Q. Do I have to fill out all the fields of the application? Some don't apply to my character.
A. Unless otherwise specified, you must fill out all fields. If something doesn't apply to your character - such as family, explain why. Do they have no family left alive? Have they never met their family? Let us know.

Q. Do I have to give my contact info?
A. At the very least, you'll have to provide the mods with an e-mail address to apply. If you do not wish to any contact info publicly, you do not have to. Your age will not be listed publicly either. This is for our protection only, as all players must be at least 18 years of age.

Q. Why is my application being rejected?!
A. More often than not, it's for one of three reasons:

  • Obvious errors, from grammar, spelling, and format; or a blatant disregard of the rules in any way. For example, if your character's history is a thin paragraph or so, even though we clearly state that we need otherwise on the application page? Denied on the spot. We do not have very many rules, it should be no problem whatsoever to follow them.
  • Lack of balance as a character - particularly in the weaknesses and strengths. Simply put, if your character has far more strengths than weaknesses, or if your weaknesses are all very small in light of their strengths, then we're going to at least ask that this be edited for consideration. To clear one thing up, 'selfless, cares too much, emotional' will never be an acceptable three weaknesses for a character.
  • Unoriginal characters. If your character is plain, boring, and/or has nothing new to offer the game... what's the fun in that?

Q. Are supernatural elements a part of the game? The ship is lost in the Bermuda Triangle!
A. Once the ship is lost, yes, we will be incorporating several supernatural elements - from ghost ships to, well, ghosts! As things grow weirder on the ship, we mods will be looking for as much to exploit work with in our cast of characters as possible. If you have an idea for your character to be haunted, please contact the mods with questions and ideas.

Q. Can I have a psychic/telepathic/*insert magical/supernatural ability here* character?
A. This is a very complicated subject. Let us try to explain in the best way possible. If your character believes that they are a psychic, a medium, a telepath, an alien lovechild, whatever it is that's slightly paranormal, that's fine. But it must be clear in both the application and your narrative that it's their belief, and not the outright truth. Acceptable: Little Suzy believes she is a prophet. Unacceptable: Little Suzy is a prophet, and her visions are always right. She can predict your character's death.

Additionally, please note that this is not a supernatural game. Your character is not a super hero. Your character does not have super speshul abilities. Your character is not The Antichrist with out-of-this-world powers. Now a character that thought they were the antichrist with out-of-this-world powers... that could be funny...

Keeping this mind, we will never accept vampires, werewolves, angels, *insert supernatural race here*. A character that believes he's an honest to god vampire? Fine. A character that will burst into flame and die if sunlight touches him, and needs to drink blood to live? No.

Q. Can the journal system be used to send private messages/emails from one character to another?
A. Yes! Absolutely, we 100% encourage this. Please label posts that should be read as private messages as such, and who they are viewable to. Please post private messages on your character journal, as opposed to in the community.

Q. What is inside each character's cabin?
A. Every room is different, depending on what room they are assigned/how many people are traveling together. Every character will have a cabin to themself, but large parties will be put in suites. Please refer to the About the Ship page to see room descriptions, as well as see character room assignments.

Q. Do the staff and crew have special cabins?
A. Yes, the staff and crew will have cabins away from the rest of the ship. Their rooms will also be explained on the About the Ship page.

Q. It says that the passengers all have an individual theme room. What does this mean?
A. A-ha, this is something we hope you will all have a lot of fun. Every passenger room/suite has an individual theme. Be it tame like Nautical or extreme like Vinyl Suite, every passenger room is different - and will be tailored to each character. The mods will let you know your theme and room description upon character acceptance. You do not have a choice in your theme, and some will be random. But don't worry, we won't put a happy family of four in a bondage dungeon.

Q. Can my character switch rooms?
A. If your character is unsatisfied with their room assignment, they can file a complaint and be moved - once the crew and general order is still around. After that... well...

Q. Can my character bring their pet?
A. That depends on what it is. Cats, dogs, ferrets... typical housepets are fine. Ponies or exotic tigers are very obviously not.

Q. I'd like certain details of my character's past to be a secret (IE: they're a serial killer on the run). Is this acceptable?
A. Secret pasts are allowed, but MUST be mod-approved. The mods have to know this stuff, though they promise not to tell. If you are writing character with a huge secret, we request that you contact a mod regarding how to apply properly to have your secret kept.

I really like this concept, but it looks like I'm pretty late...if I wanted to app my OC for this game, how would I introduce her to it so late into the action...?

(heh using a character journal for another game because I haven't set up my own personal or OC IJ yet ftw, sorry)

Actually it's only a few days in - the ship hasn't been lost in the triangle yet. I would recommend saying your character spent the last few days in their cabin with some severe jet lag or seasickness. ^_^

Awesome, thanks :) I'll probably get a journal started for her and get the application rolling tomorrow night then. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly :)

as the previous poster asked, is it too late to bring a character into the action? I quite like the premise, but am unsure of my timing.

It's never too late. :) We are always happy for new players! It's no problem to just say your character was there all along, or give the jet lag or sea sickness excuse.

Ahahaha. God, that makes so much sense. Do you suppose I could make a character who is a SCUBA-Diving instructor, supposed to take the willing passengers on day trips once they had reached tropical waters?
